UV-Cured Finish for Hardwood Flooring: How In-Line Curing Works

How a UV-cured finish is applied to hardwood flooring in line, the finish options from unfinished to color and effect UV, and why it supports consistent color.

Color consistency is one of the hardest things to hold in a flooring program. A floor finished board by board, or in batches under changing conditions, can drift within a single lot and again between reorders. For buyers running a private-label color or a multi-phase project, the finishing method matters as much as the color itself.

What a UV-cured finish is

A UV-cured finish is a coating that hardens when exposed to ultraviolet light, rather than drying slowly in air. On a finishing line, boards pass under UV lamps and the coating cures in line, so each board leaves the station with a cured surface before the next stage. It is a factory process: the finish is applied and cured before the flooring is packed, and the installer lays a board that is already finished.

The practical effect for a buyer is control. Because the finish is applied and cured in a fixed sequence on a line, the variables that change color and sheen can be held steady from board to board.

The in-line finishing sequence at Vu Uy Wood

Stain and topcoat are applied on our UV finishing line, with process settings controlled to support consistency within a production lot and across repeat orders. The sequence has five stages:

StageWhat happensWhy it matters
1. StainingColor applied after sandingStain goes onto a prepared, calibrated surface
2. DryingConditioned before the next coatThe stain settles before it is sealed
3. CoatingTopcoat applied at a controlled film weightEven film means even sheen and protection
4. UV curingUV-cured before the next stageEach layer is fixed before the next one goes on
5. InspectionVisual inspection before packingFinish defects are caught before the carton

Why each stage is controlled

Staining after sanding. Stain reacts to the surface it lands on. Sanding beforehand gives a consistent surface, and where a texture is specified, the texture is created in the wood before finishing. The stain then settles into that surface in a repeatable way.

Drying and conditioning. Each board is conditioned before the next coat, so the color has settled before topcoat goes on.

Controlled film weight. How much topcoat goes onto each board affects sheen, clarity and how the color reads through the coating. Holding film weight steady is one of the main reasons in-line finishing produces a more uniform lot.

Curing before the next stage. Each coat is cured before the board moves on, so layers do not disturb each other.

Inspection before packing. Visual inspection closes the sequence. Separately, surface inspection checks texture and sheen across the production lot, and color inspection checks boards against the approved master panel.

Finish options

The finish step on the Vu Uy Specify page offers four routes:

FinishWhat it isWhen to use it
UnfinishedSanded and supplied ready for site-applied finishingProjects where the installer will apply the final finish on site
Clear UVNatural oak protected with a clear UV topcoat and no added stainThe lightest, most natural expression of the oak
Color UVColor stain beneath a protective UV topcoatThe standard route for a colored UV-finished floor
Color and Effect UVColor stain combined with an effect such as smoke, wash or a two-tone reactionFinishes that need more depth and tonal variation than a flat stain

Unfinished

Unfinished boards leave the factory sanded and ready for the finisher. This suits projects where the specifier wants a site-applied finish, for example to match other on-site finishes or to finish the floor as one continuous surface after installation. The color and sheen are then set on site rather than in the factory, so the factory’s master panel does not govern the final color.

Clear UV

Clear UV keeps the natural tone of French White Oak with no added stain. It is the simplest route and shows the grade and grain most directly.

Color UV

A color stain under a UV topcoat is the standard route for a colored UV-finished floor. The stain sets the tone and the topcoat sets the sheen and protects the color.

Color and Effect UV

Some looks cannot be made with a flat stain. Smoked tones, washed surfaces and two-tone effects add depth and variation between grain and background. These finishes combine a color stain with an additional effect such as smoke, wash or a two-tone reaction. Because they have more variation by design, sample approval is especially important: review several boards, not one.

Sheen levels

Sheen is set by the topcoat. Vu Uy offers Matte, Extra Matte and Ultra Matte. A lower sheen reflects less light, which softens glare in rooms with strong window light and makes texture read more naturally. Sheen interacts with surface texture: a wire-brushed surface already scatters light, so it can look lower in sheen than a smooth board with the same topcoat. Our article on wire-brushed vs smooth oak flooring covers how texture and sheen work together.

Why in-line finishing supports consistency

Two kinds of consistency matter to a flooring buyer:

Natural variation from the grade will always be present, since oak is not a uniform material. The goal of in-line finishing is that the finish itself does not add variation on top of the wood.

Coatings and emissions

The coatings on our finishing line are held to 2010 volatile organic compound (VOC) content limits. For composite products entering the United States, the formaldehyde emission standard to know is CARB Phase 2; the California Air Resources Board publishes the program details.

What to ask your supplier

Working with Vu Uy Wood

Stain and topcoat are applied and UV-cured on our own finishing line, and the approved reference is carried through the full production lot. You can choose between Unfinished, Clear UV, Color UV and Color and Effect UV, together with sheen and texture, on the Specify page. To see the line itself, visit our production overview. We normally reply within one working day.
